Charlotte Elizabeth Vignes passed away on Monday, August 26, 2013. Mrs. Vignes was born on October 13, 1917 to John Holmes Lee and Charlotte Parks Lee in Perry County, Alabama. She attended public schools in Perry County and graduated from Perry County High School. She then graduated from Judson College, Marion, Alabama with a Bachelor's degree in Home Economics. It was while employed with the Alabama Extension Department as a Home Demonstration Agent that she met her husband, Bert Leon Vignes. Bert and Charlotte moved to Mobile where they raised six children.
Mrs. Vignes was a dedicated community worker. She was a charter member of the Sage Avenue Baptist Church where she continued to worship as long as she was able. She dedicated her church life and her personal life to teaching children. She was the first kindergarten teacher at Sage Avenue Baptist Church, an early example of the many church and private preschool programs now flourishing. She also supported many community organizations throughout her life to include; Boy Scouts, American Heart Association, DAR, UDC and the multiple sports teams and PTO causes generated from her six children.
By far, the most dear to her heart, outside of her family, was her alma mater, Judson College. She served locally and nationally in the Judson College Alumnae Association. She transported prospective students to Judson's campus, supported the local students that were enrolled at Judson and paid tuition for all three of her daughters to graduate from Judson College. She touched countless lives as kindergarten teacher, Sunday School teacher, carpool driver, backyard coach/referee, committee chair, wife, mother, grandmother and faithful encourager to all who were fortunate to call her friend I later years Charlotte loved to travel, was a disciplined aquatic exercise participant and was known to charm all the medical personnel who cared for her.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband, Bert Leon Vignes, and daughter, Charlotte Vignes Spruill. She is survived by sons; Robert A. Vignes (Martha), John M. Vignes (Merle), Bert Leon Vignes, Jr.; daughter; Janet Vignes Hughey (Sonny), Joan Vignes Newman (Mike) ; four grandchildren; Laura Vignes Howard (Chris), Beau Vignes (Chloe), Sarah Hughey Maples (Jonathan), John A. Hughey, III and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Sarah Lee Davis Swartout and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 form 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Dignity's Dauphin Street Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. from Sage Avenue Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
