May 25, 2016 Richard H. Cassady, Lt. Col, USAF Retired Left us on Wednesday to join Jesus and his wife, Daisy. He was born in Nashville, Arkansas to Lankston and Gertrude Cassady. His family had a chicken hatchery and at the age of 4 he saw a crop duster plane fly over the farm and he knew then, he wanted to be a pilot. At the age of 18, he joined the US Army Air Corps in early January after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He began his flight training in Cuero, TX after working his way up through the Air Corps ranks initially as an aircraft mechanic. Then served in the US Army Air Corps 9th Tactical Air Command where he flew 84 reconnaissance missions in Europe. He earned the Purple Heart during the D-Day invasion after catching severe flack which also caused the loss of his wingman. He also earned the Distinguished Service Cross for successfully identifying a strategic column of over 60 German tanks and armored vehicles near Stavelot, Belgium. Often flying less than 10 feet above a river bed bordered by high cliffs, and the efforts of his wingman, 2nd Lieut. Abraham Jaffe, led to the later attack and demise of this critical German advance during the Battle of the Bulge. The mission was very loosely portrayed in the move, "The Battle of the Bulge." He later flew air transport missions during the Berlin Airlift and continued his career flying numerous attack and bomber support missions in a P-51 during the Korean conflict. Served two non-combat tours in Vietnam before retiring in 1970. Met his wife "Daisy" while serving as a Flight Instructor in Meridian, MS. When he first saw her, he said "she was the sweetest little thing he had ever seen in his life." They began their life together of selfless love to everyone they encountered. They were stationed in many countries around the world. He and Daisy remained married for over "62 years, 2 months, and three weeks." It was a marriage he deemed "wonderful".
