Bernice Agnes Martin Blackman 96, of Mobile, AL, passed away peacefully into the arms of her Savior the Lord Jesus Christ on August 31, 2021. Mrs. Blackman was part of the tough generation. She lived through the Great Depression and had so many stories to tell. She graduated from Murphy High School. She retired from the United States Army Corps of Engineers. She faithfully served the Lord in the nursery at Sage Avenue Baptist Church, teaching preschoolers. She loved visiting shut-ins and many families over the years. She volunteered for many years with the West Regional Library. One of her favorite hobbies was putting together her many photo albums filled with incredible memories. She loved working in her yard especially with plants.
She is survived by two sons Richard "Dick" M. (Nancy) Blackman and James E. (Lisa) Blackman, Jr., 9 loving grandchildren and 13 precious great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind two sisters, Alma Ruth Green, and Susan Tuberville, nieces, nephews and many dear extended family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Dr. James E. Blackman and her son, Robert Earl Blackman.
Mrs. Blackman was a devoted and faithful wife, mother, and grandmother. She spent her life serving and caring for her family and others. One of her most selfless acts was donating her kidney to her son, Robert in 1973.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to her precious and faithful caregivers: Rosa Stewart, Caroline Lumpkin, Shirley Lumpkin, Donna Williams, and Gloria Pitts. We would like to thank Saad Hospice and their wonderful staff for their tender and precious care of our mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
