NOVEMBER 21, 1931 – FEBRUARY 21, 2023
James “Sonny” Allen was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, February 20, 2023, while surrounded by family and friends. He was born November 21, 1931 and lived in Mobile, AL before later settling in Baton Rouge. Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, James E. and Alma Jones Allen; 3 sisters, Ann Allen Neese, Christine Earnhardt, and Helen Allen Bunch. He is survived by 3 nieces, Erett Burychka (Jim), Joyce Langlois (Julian), Sharon Deville (Keith); and 1 great niece, Ann MeShell Neese. Sonny also leaves behind many loved ones and friends that he loved deeply. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He was discharged in 1952 after spending almost a year in Walter Reed Hospital due to injuries sustained in battle. He was awarded a Purple Heart along with several other commendations. He later became a Merchant Marine and traveled much of the world for over 38 years before retiring in 1990. His stories about life experiences and travels captivated anyone who cared to lend an ear. He was an avid fan of LSU baseball and had season tickets for over 30 years. He will be remembered as a positive, grateful, kind and generous friend to all who were privileged to know him. Each day, Sonny expressed how blessed he was. Among his blessings were two incredible neighbors, Mike and Lori. They both watched over him, visited with him for many hours, and took great care of his yard and home. Special thanks to the staff at Audubon Hospice, especially Nurse Ingrid, along with Total Live-In Care and his compassionate and faithful sitters, Delilah Bozeman and Rosie White. Also to the VA of Baton Rouge, and CNA, Ursula, who faithfully provided caring services over the years. He was a devoted member of Family Worship Center for over 30 years, he loved the Lord and sharing his faith with others.

Visitation will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, Florida Blvd., from 8:30 to 9:30, with services starting at 9:30, officiated by Pastor Dave Smith. He will be laid to rest at Mobile Memorial Gardens, in Mobile, AL.
