Cleo Matthews Sumerlin, born March 14, 1926 in Laurel, MS slipped away peacefully on Thursday, June 15, 2023. Ms. Sumerlin has been a resident of Mobile since 1957 when the family moved to Mobile in order for her to start a career at International Paper C. She worked at International in the sheet finishing department until her retirement in 1981.
Cleo was preceded in death by her first husband Linton Matthews, second husband Elmer Sumerlin, son Larry Matthews and grandson Phillip Towery. She is survived by one sister Alta Mae Spradley of Laurel, MS, two daughters Linda Calhoun and Carolyn Bullock (Mike), both of Mobile, AL, four granddaughters, Deana Crim (Shannon) Janika Davis (Neal) Dairica Odom (Chey) and Kimberly Loftin (Matt) and grandson Chris Matthews. She is also survived by great grandchildren Jake, Carson and Hayden Davis, Blaine (Katie) and Bailey Crim, Rebekah and Kyle Matthews (Kayla), Brodie and Mattie Loftin, Raylee Odom, two great-great grandchildren Linton and Hudson Matthews, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Ms. Sumerlin was a resident of Brookside Senior Living for a number of years where she enjoyed her time visiting with friends and playing her bingo as long as she was physically able. Her family appreciates all the kindness shown to her during her time at Brookside. Also, the family would like to especially thank her caregiver Victoria Baggett who was everything and more one could ask for in a caregiver. She showed such love and kindness to her Ms. Cleo and Ms. Cleo was quick to tell you that she was part of her family and we will be forever grateful to her.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday June 24, 2023 at Radney Funeral Home 3155 Dauphin Street Mobile, AL 36606. Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon with services beginning at noon. Interment will follow in Mobile Memorial Gardens, Mobile, AL.
