Lansing Steed

April 5, 1927 — June 19, 2023
Lansing Steed died peacefully at the William F. Green State Veterans Home on June 19th, 2023 at 96 years young. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his 2 children, Elise (Robert) Split, Lance (Jennifer) Steed, 4 grandchildren, Madison Split, Morgan Split, Jackson Steed, Benjamin Steed, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He served in the Navy and was a World War II veteran. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in physical fitness. He was an avid runner and a black belt in judo. He was the physical education director at the YMCA and taught judo and karate as well as handball and racquetball. He taught women's self-defense classes, which was how he met the love of his life, Doris Steed. They were married for 56 years until her death in 2021. He loved to challenge family and friends with math problems and complicated riddles. He devised intricate treasure hunts with clever clues (usually written in rhyme) for his children with a jar of coins at the "X" on the map. He made up stories about "Judo Jack" that mesmerized all. He lived life on his own terms. He was an excellent craftsman and contractor in his middle years. Among his creations was a beautiful 46 foot sailboat, named Quest, which was home to his family in the 1970s. Rest in peace. We wish you a six minute mile in heaven. Love, your adoring family. Special thanks to friends and family, Dr. Martin Lester, Patricia Sullivan, Dr. Mina Jacob, the staff at Diagnostic Medical Clinic, the staff at Mobile Infirmary cardiology floor and ER, Urology Associates, Dr. Paul Scott, Dr. James Mercer, Taylor Morgan, Mobile Infirmary Chaplin, Crowne of Springhill, Community Hospice, especially Gavin, and W.F.
