James Reid Spires Sr.

January 31, 1920 - August 19, 2023
Our beloved father, James R. Spires, Sr., passed away peacefully in his home on August 19, 2023, at the age of 103. He was born in Louisville, Alabama on July 31, 1920. He served as a pilot trainer in the Army Air Force during World War II and worked many years in civil service. He loved to hunt and fish and was an avid gardener. He was known for growing the best tomatoes in the area and supplied all he knew with ample supplies during the season. More than anything, he loved his family and friends. Most of his vacation time was spent traveling to be with loved ones and when he was no longer able to travel, he looked forward to visits from family and friends. He was preceded in death by the two greatest loves of his life and the mothers of his children, Lucille and Bernice. He leaves behind his children, James L. Spires and his wife Janie of Mobile, Jerelyn Spires Critser and her husband, Colonel Ronald Critser, USMC, retired of Simpsonville, SC, Dr James R. Spires, Jr and his wife Michelle of Mobile, and Richard Spires and his wife Cheryl of Hot Springs Village, AR. He enjoyed his grandchildren, and their visits brightened his life. He leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. He was also preceded in death by his father and mother, Charlie and Katie Spires, sisters, Dora and Mary, brother Gene, grandson, Chris Olive, and many other family and friends. He will have a crowd welcoming him home in heaven. The family wishes to thank the wonderful care provided to James by his care team of Cynthia Newsome, Lillie Williams, Tonya Petties and Mykel Williams. Their support and care were vital to his physical and mental well-being since the passing of his wife, Bernice.
