Sammie America

April 6, 1938 — November 8, 2023
Sammie L. America, 85, passed away on November 8, 2023, 3:42 am, at The Retreat, Hospice by SAAD - Mobile AL. Mr. America was born on April 6, 1938 to Mr. and Mrs. Richard and Lillian America. At the age of 6, the America family moved to Atmore where Sammie attended school. He had a great love of basketball and excelled in his days in high school. Upon graduating high school, Sammie joined his brother Henry America in New York City to pursue business opportunities. While in New York City, Sammie developed his relationship with Christ that changed him forever. He joined Walker Memorial Baptist Church and became a deacon. He was very instrumental in all church activities, especially with developing the young men to become great ambassadors for Christ. New York City held many blessings for Sammie. It was the place he met the love of his life, Francina Hudmon. After a beautiful courtship, they married in 1961. From this union, they bore a daughter, Adrienne America. Sammie worked at American Airlines at John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport in NYC for 40 years until his retirement. After his retirement, he and his family returned to Mobile, AL to establish new roots. It was there his love for the gospel grew stronger. He joined Dauphin Way Baptist Church and became a deacon, once again being a pivotal part of the community and being a strong example of Christian manhood. He never shunned the opportunity to share the good news of Christ. His legacy of giving, loving, and the message of the power of forgiveness will forever live in the lives he touched. Sammie leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 62 years, Francina America; daughters Adrienne America Collins (Sammy Collins) and Edith Davis; sister Maggie McMillian; granddaughter Adrianna Nicole Vaughn (Joshua Vaughn); grandson Adrian Collins; a special affinity relationship with niece Linda Faye Johnson, nephew Andre A. America Sr., and friend Roxann Horton; and a host of other relatives, friends, and loved ones. The family would like to thank Providence Hospital, Sacred Heart Hospital, and The Retreat by SAAD for their tireless work and support while he was in their care.
