Foye Holley Gunter was born October 17, 1931 near the little town of Kinston in the wiregrass region of southeast Alabama. She was the third oldest among five siblings. Her parents were hard working farmers. As times were hard, the children would have to work in the fields. She recalled many times coming out of the fields after a long day's work of pulling peanuts completely black from dirt and sweat. Whether it was pulling peanuts, picking cotton, or helping with crops, she learned the value of hard work and was always eager to help with any chore. After graduating from Kinston High School in 1949, she moved to Mobile to live with her sister and find work. While working behind the counter in a little sandwich shop downtown, she met her future husband Wesley. Their romance was a whirlwind and they married 2 short weeks later in Lucedale, Mississippi. Their love for each other was evident to everyone who knew them. They remained devoted to each other until his death in 2006 at the age of 83. She was an incredible cook. She learned the art of homestyle cooking from her mother and could lay out a mighty good Sunday Meal. She poured over every issue of Southern Living magazine and loved to make the most delicious cakes found in those recipes. Her biscuits and chocolate syrup was the favorite among all the grandkids and grown ups alike. If you spent the night at her house, nothing else would do. She had a green thumb and loved working with flowers. Daylilies were her favorite. She grew and propagated many in her backyard and loved walking in her yard every morning to see which ones had bloomed in the night. She would always say when I get to Heaven, I hope the Lord lets me work with the flowers. Foye made a commitment to Christ as a young adult. As this became the focal point of her life, she greatly influenced her family and people around her. She was a faithful member of First Assembly of God in Mobile for nearly sixty years. Her Bible was always open next to her bedside. Her faith was the guiding light of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Wesley Edmond Gunter, Sr, her son James Gregory Gunter, and her daughter Alice Faye Gunter Calhoun and long time son-in-law, George Maddox. She is survived by her daughter Teresa Susan Gunter Maddox, son Wesley Edmond Gunter, Jr. (Karen), grandchildren Paula Gunter Casallo (Michael), April Gunter Sheffield (Jonathan), Matthew Scott Calhoun (Sarah), Holley Gunter Ingram (Jay), Thomas Wesley Gunter (Sarah), Emily Calhoun Brown (Nathan), Amy Maddox Ruppert (Doug), Wesley Edmond Gunter III (Laura Beth), and Kimberly Calhoun Moore (Matthew), 17 great grandchildren, sister Faye Holley Brewer, a daughter-n-law for many years Daphne Wesley, a son-n-law for many years Joel Calhoun, a special neighbor Brittany Griffin, a devoted caregiver Norine Walker, and many more friends and loved ones.

Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at 10am. The family will receive friends from 9am until service time Thursday at the funeral home.
