Elsie Ruth (Thompson) Olewnik, 93, passed away on Friday, March 15, 2024. At the time, she was residing at Crowne of Springhill, where she received wonderful care for over four years. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Anthony J. Olewnik, her parents (Willie Ruth and Herman Thompson and her sisters, Dollie Newman and Ruby Williamson, and her son-in-law, Arthur (Buddy) Rohm.
Elsie was born at home on December 4, 1930, along with her twin sister, Ruby, to Willie Ruth and Herman Thompson. She graduated from Murphy High School and worked at Gayfer's Department Store. At Gayfer's, she met a handsome sailor stationed in Pensacola. He said "I would like to take you out. I have a car, but no money." She said, "Well how about that, I just got paid!". So, that was the beginning of her 42-year marriage to Tony.
She is survived by her three children: Anthony Olewnik (Maurice), Theresa Rohm, and Elsie Moore (Bernard); five grandchildren including: Joseph Olewnik (Lisa), Benjamin Olewnik (Jennifer), Tyler Rohm, Liam Moore, and Madison Rohm; three great-grandchildren: Elaina, Morgan, and Anthony (Breeze) Olewnik. Elsie was known for her sense of wit and playfulness. She was always one to play a joke on you or the bus driver taking her to Branson, and in her later years, teasing those around her "just so she could laugh with ya." Elsie enjoyed a long, happy life of friends and family, years of love and fun as a member and queen of the two Mardi Gras organizations. Throughout her life, she loved deep sea-fishing on the "Seawall", spending time at Dauphin Island, traveling, dancing, laughing, attending Catholic Mass, and eating oysters. Did I mention eating oysters? Elsie also favored bright colors, so feel free to wear red or bright colors to share in her celebration of life. In her honor, bring a smile or a laugh to those around you.
