Mr. B.G. Thompson, born August 7, 1936, passed away Friday January 15, 2021. B.G. is a native and lifelong resident of Alabama. B.G. was preceded in death by his parents, his nine brothers, William A., Ernest, Percy, Clarence, Daniel, Claude Robert, Francis and Jack; two sisters Mildred Johnson and Betty Lou Thompson; his daughter Carolyn Christine (born June 3, 1957-December 6, 1957), his son Benjamin Gregory Thompson (born August 26, 1960-April 20, 2003), and his twin granddaughters Katie and Blair Amato. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carolyn Thompson, daughter Nadine Thompson of Rockville, MD, daughter Jackie Amato (husband Glen Amato) of Elkridge, MD, grandchildren, Gina Banks (husband Trey Banks) of GA, Whitney Amato (husband Matt Yanos) of PA, Tina Moreno (husband Gary Moreno) of MD, Gordon Amato (wife Julie Amato) of MD, Nina Thompson (husband Chris Buyers) of MD, Brennan Amato (wife Christine Wakar), and Christine Amato of MD. He is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. B.G. led an amazing life, full of adventure. At just 19, he married the love of his life. Not long after, they started their family. His adventure eventually led him to Maryland, where he took residency in Rockville. There, he and Carolyn raised their two daughters and son. B.G. worked for NOAA as chief resource statistics division and later fishery consultant, in Washington, DC. He was part of the research team that discovered Omega-3 and the importance of Omega-3 for our bodies. The brilliance of his work led to many of his writings being published in books that are in the Library of Congress. His position also provided him with the opportunity to travel to every continent minus Antarctica. After raising his children, B.G. and Carolyn took in three of their granddaughters and raised them. B.G. loved being a Papa/Granddad to all seven of his grands. B.G. was a Catholic who loved the Lord. He was a part of Knights of Columbus, holding every title of office at some point. In addition, he was a faithful servant at St. Jude Catholic Church in Aspen Hill, MD up until he and his wife moved back to Alabama in 2004. B.G. was a man of great intelligence. He strived to teach his children, grandchildren, and even his great-grandchildren, the importance of hard work, honesty, and forgiveness. He told the most amazing stories about his childhood and his travel endeavors. He loved watching his classic cartoons and reading the funny pages in the newspaper. It wasn’t hard to love and adore B.G.. He loved his family. B.G. is going to be greatly missed by so many, but we are so grateful to have had him for the time we did. Graveside services will be at 12 noon on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at Mobile Memorial Gardens.
