Betty Hammons

January 8, 2020
Betty Lou Hammons, 88, of Mobile, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 5, 2020. She was born Betty Lou Pugh in Jay, FL, in 1931, as the twelfth of sixteen siblings to Riley and Leona Pugh. Betty went on to attend the University of South Alabama College of Nursing and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1979. Her children and family were so proud of her for following her dreams no matter her age. After graduation, Betty worked in Labor and Delivery at the University of South Alabama Hospital in Mobile for many years. She was an amazing nurse and was well loved and respected by her peers. Betty was devoted to her three children, Bob, Kathe, and Regina; her grandchildren Bianca, Adam, Jay, Sterling, Jesse, and Alanna; and her great-grandchildren, Lina and Michael. They were her pride and joy. She spent countless hours with them at the pool or beach (her favorite place), supported them in their various activities, taught a couple of grandkids how to drive because their parents didn’t have the patience, and generally spoiled them rotten. Nothing put a smile on her face like talking about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty loved traveling, dancing, and spending time with friends and family. She traveled all over the world to places such as Ireland, China, Germany, Mexico, and Jamaica. Betty enjoyed line dancing with her girlfriends and traveled the country square dancing. Above all, she loved getting together with her siblings and their families telling stories, laughing, and eating. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Riley and Leona Pugh; the father of her children, Robert P. Hammons; her sisters, Lula, Lizzie, Leona, Laura Mae, and Gertrude; and her brothers, RC, Bill, John Henry, Charlie, Aubrey, Richard, Kenneth, and Alvin. She is survived by her sister, Faye Rowell (Roy), her brother, Calvin Pugh (Jo Ann), and her children Bob Hammons and his wife Ursula of Gurley, AL, Kathe Thompson and her husband Bill of Orange Beach, AL and Regina Johnson of Alameda, CA. Betty was the loving grandmother of six grandchildren, Bianca Hammons Measels (Michael), Adam Hammons (Reijun), Jay Hammons (Leslie), Sterling Thompson, Jesse Hammons, and Alanna Thompson Greene (Austin); and two great-grandchildren, Lina Measels and Michael Measels. She is remembered by her many nieces and nephews. All of these she loved and touched deeply. Please join us in celebrating her life, Wednesday morning January 8, 2020, between 10 am – 11 am at Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin St. Mobile. Funeral service to follow in the chapel. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens 6100 Three Notch Road Mobile, AL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to South Brookley United Methodist Church Youth Ministry.
