Alberta May Johnson Hathaway, aged 89, entered peacefully into heaven on Thursday, January 17, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. Alberta, or “Bert” (as she liked to be called) was born in Chippewa Lake, Michigan to Albert and Florence Johnson and was a graduate of Big Rapids, Michigan High School. She married her husband, Robert Hathaway, on August 15, 1947 and they celebrated 53 years together, before his passing in 2001.
Bert worked several years for Michigan Bell Telephone as a phone operator. She left to become a stay-at-home mom to her two children, Pam and Craig. After the children were grown, she went back to work as a service representative for the State Farm Insurance Co. regional office in Marshall, Michigan. She and Robert enjoyed many happy years raising their family and spending time with friends in Marshall.In 1993, they relocated to Mobile, Alabama to be closer to family and escape the Michigan winters. Bert was an active member of Dauphin Way United Methodist Church, Cosmopolitan Club, New Mobilian’s Bridge Group, and PEO. She loved playing bridge, reading and spending time with family and friends. Bert was predeceased by her husband, Robert Hathaway; son, Donald Hathaway; parents, Albert and Florence Johnson; sister, Margaret Johnson Nelson; and brothers, Verlin and Gordon Johnson. She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Horton (Dan); son, Craig Hathaway (Clara); grandchildren, Emily Horton, Elizabeth Horton, Andrew Horton (Janet), Sam Hathaway, Catherine Hathaway and great-granddaughters, Susan, Virginia and Caroline Horton. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 24, 2019 at Dauphin Way United Methodist Church from 9:00 to 10:00 AM with a memorial service to follow in the Chapel. Interment will be at Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be given to Dauphin Way United Methodist Church, 1507 Dauphin Street, Mobile, Alabama, 36604.
