A true servant of God and leader of men, our dear Father and Papa walked into the arms of The Father on Father’s Day. Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.
What a blessing to love and know this gentle giant of a man.
His love was to his Lord, his family, and his church.
A long-time member of Cottage Hill Baptist Church serving on many committees and leadership roles. He enjoyed singing in the choir and later with the Joy Singers. He was known for his booming “A…MEN”!
He loved spending time traveling with family and making sweet memories with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed planning trips and discovering new and exciting places with friends.
He was a beloved Coach, Teacher, Principal, and Administrator who touched many lives.
He was a native of Bayview, AL, and a long-time resident of Mobile, AL. After graduation from Minor High School, Bayview, AL, he received his bachelor's degree from Livingston Teacher’s College (University of West Alabama). He then went on to attain his Master’s and Doctorate of Education from the University of Alabama. Jerry was a life-long and avid Crimson Tide football fan and loved to say “Roll…Tide”.
Survivors include one daughter Jerri Ann (Jeff) Hester of Daphne, AL, grandchildren, Blake (Amberly) Hester of Scottdale AZ, Emily (Clark) Gerken of Daphne, AL, and two Great Grandchildren, Harper Grace Hester and Jack Ellis Gerken.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife 57 years, Dorothy Anne Turner Benson, and his daughter Patricia Cheryl “Patti” Benson.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 26, 2020, at 12:00 p.m. from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the service on Friday. Burial will follow at Mobile Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Cottage Hill Christian Academy, CHCA Legacy Fund, CHCAcademy.org
A chapel service will be held at 12pm on Friday, 06/26/2020 from Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, followed by a committal service at the grave site.
