Harold Broomfield McLain

October 18, 1930 ~ November 14, 2022 (age 92)
Harold Broomfield McLain devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, died peacefully on Saturday, November 12, 2022, after a year of declining health due to oral cancer. Surrounded by his family, our beloved dad, affectionately known as "Papa," quietly and peacefully slipped into the arms of Jesus. As a WWII vet, he fought valiantly to the very end, but he was just tired and ready to go. The battle is now over. Our hearts are broken but we rejoice that he is free of pain and in the presence of the Lord. Although we are going to miss him deeply, we have been so blessed to have had him for almost 99 years. In the midst of our sorrow, we still have hope because of our faith in God. Some of our last words to him were not "Good bye Papa," but rather "See you later!" Papa was part of the greatest generation to ever live and he was so proud to have served our country during WWII. When people thanked him for his service he would often say, "I just did what was expected of me." Our dad, along with many other Vets, was unquestionably a Hero, but he never saw himself as one. Harold was preceded in death by, Jo Ann, his loving wife of 64 years. He is survived by four wonderful children, Connie McLain Kirby (Hal) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Mark McLain (Janet), Toni McLain Bunton (Jay), and Tim McLain, all of Mobile, Alabama; nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews; devoted and lifetime friends, Maurice and Thelma Neely and Melba Shepheard; special friends and neighbors Rick, Angel, Michael & Jamie Brannon; as well as other extended family and friends. On Saturday, November 19th, the family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. at Mobile Memorial Gardens with a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, we feel that it would be fitting to honor our dad by allowing family and friends to donate in his memory to The Fisher House Foundation. This organization provides assistance to veterans and military families in need of transportation and/or housing close to a loved one who is hospitalized due to illness or injury.
