J.L. "Jay" Weldy

September 26, 2022
On the morning of September 22, 2022, Joseph "Jay" Leslie Weldy passed away peacefully surrounded and comforted by his family. Jay was born on October 31, 1939, the second of five children to Orville and Elizabeth Weldy, in Mobile, Alabama where he lived for most of his full and abundant life. Although they both attended Murphy High School, it wasn't until after graduation that he met and married the love of his life, Ruth Jane Weldy (Dickey) with whom he would share sixty-two wonderful years of love and companionship. He began his carrier working for Refrigeration Supply Company, eventually working his way up to owner and operator until his retirement in 2006. Throughout his life, he enjoyed attending Alabama football games, playing golf and traveling with his wife, children and grandchildren. His selfless service to others is exemplified by his time in the Army National Guard, countless hours serving his church community, leading his Sunday School Class, and the many acts of kindness and support he gave to anyone in need who were fortunate to know him. Jay was preceded in death by his father, Orville, his mother, Elizabeth, and his brother Wayne Weldy, Sr. (Emma Lee Weldy). He is survived by his wife Ruth Weldy, his son Alan Weldy, his daughter Leigh Wermuth (Robert Wermuth), his three grandchildren, Casey Johnson (Garrett Johnson), Brandon Wermuth (Kerry Dunn), AJ Wermuth, his soon-to-arrive and eagerly anticipated great grandson, Woody Johnson, brothers Marshall Weldy (Trish Weldy), Bill Weldy (Kay Weldy), sister Libby Simms (Steve Simms), and many nieces and nephews.
