James Monroe Nettles, Sr.

James Monroe Nettles, Sr., lovingly know as Jimmie and Pop, passed away on Thursday February 4, 2021. Jimmie was born in Thomasville, Alabama on October 2, 1924. When his family moved to Mobile during his high school years he lived with his football coach so he could finish his high school football career. When WWI broke out Jimmie joined the Army and served in the Army Corps of Engineers on Adak Island in Alaska during the war. After returning from his service, Jimmie became a member of the Ironworkers local 798 in Mobile and worked as an ironworker until he retired in 1989. After returning from his service in WWII, Jimmie married Lois Ramona Steiner in April 1949. They settled in Theodore, Alabama. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Theodore where he was a deacon and high school boys Sunday school teacher. He spent the last decade living in Satsuma, Alabama and attending Bayou Sara Baptist Church in Saraland. Jimmie loved deer hunting, playing Phase 10 with his siblings, and his family. He is survived by his son James Monroe Nettles Jr. (Sherry), daughter Ramona Nettles Knight (Jerry), sisters JoAnn Leuthy, June Clark, and Joyce Dumas (Terry), sister in law Ann Nettles, granddaughters Dr. Laura Azilee Powell (Donald) and Scarlett Cash Shoub (Matthew), great-granddaughter Anya Maria Powell, great-grandson Konrad James Powell, and numerous nieces, nephews, family members, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents John Nettles Sr. and Azilee Dunn Nettles, his wife Lois Steiner Nettles, his brothers John Nettles, Jr. and Joe Nettles, sister in law Margaret Nettles, brother in law Donald Leuthy, and grandson Richard Knight. We would like to thank Samantha Lewis and Rosa Malone for the excellent care Jimmie received. A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, February 8, 2021 at Mobile Memorial Gardens, 6100 Three Notch Road. Attendees are asked to gather at the funeral home parking lot at 1:30pm and drive to the graveside together. Masks are required graveside. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bayou Sara Baptist Church Food Bank.
