Katherlin Bush Hanks, age 93, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 21, 2017 at her home in Mobile. “Kat” was preceded in death by her husband of over 65 years, Robert E. Hanks and her parents, Claud Daniel Bush and Birdie Nichols Bush. She was born on November 3, 1923 in Brantley, Alabama. She is survived by daughter Kathy Hanks Gault (Craig), Katy, TX and son Dr. Robert B Hanks (Raye), Mobile. She was blessed with four grandchildren Jennifer Gault Dodge (Greg), Katy, TX; Amy Hanks Coggin (Mark), Brentwood, TN; Brian Daniel Hanks (Natalie), Aldie, VA; and Dr. Meredith Gault Brown (Dan) Ankeny, IA. “Kat” also had thirteen great grandchildren: Logan, Kate and Abby Dodge; John Mark, Audrey, Julianne, Ben and David Coggin; Caroline Hanks and Chris, Carter, Campbell and Coleman Brown.
As an eleven-year-old she trusted Jesus as her Savior at Glenwood Baptist Church. Kat and Lieutenant R.E. were married in 1943 in Troy, AL
She graduated from Troy State Teachers College. Following World War II they moved to Mobile where Mrs. Hanks began teaching in the Mobile County Public School System. She taught at Azalea Road Middle School and Davidson High School for twenty-five years. Mrs. Hanks retired as Chairman of the Science Department at Davidson High School. She was a faithful and active member of Dauphin Way Baptist Church for sixty-eight years where she taught youth and children’s Sunday School and was a member of Women On Mission. During retirement she volunteered at Mobile Infirmary making puppets for children. Mrs. Hanks was an expert in china painting and gave away many painted plates, pitchers, Easter eggs and Christmas ornaments to family and friends. She was a member of the Century Book Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Mobile Retired Teachers and Alabama Retired Teachers.
The family would like to thank Alice Cartledge and Shannon Tait for being such faithful friends. The family also would like to express their gratitude, thanks and appreciation to Mary Demmings, Elsie Law, Chris White, Sentay Powell, Marie Montford, Bessie Darrington and Sheryl Rowe for their excellent and loving care they provided their mother.
Active pallbearers are Mark Coggin, Dan Brown, Logan Dodge, Greg Dodge, Bob Brown and Gwyn Howard.
Graveside services will be at Mobile Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, January 25th at 10:00am
A memorial service honoring Mrs. Hanks will follow at 11:00am at Dauphin Way Baptist Church on Dauphin and I-65.
