Linda Sue Cumpton

September 20, 1944 - August 18, 2024
Sue Cumpton was born on September 20, 1944, and she passed away peacefully on August 18, 2024 at age 79. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who left a lasting legacy. Her life was a testament to faith, family and friendship. Sue grew up in the farming community of Holly Ridge, Louisiana, and after her marriage to Bobby L. Cumpton she moved to Rayville, Louisiana where she lived for many years. While in Rayville, she was involved in numerous church and civic activities, and for many years she served as the choir director and music director for Eastside Baptist Church. In the 1980’s, she and her family moved to Mobile, Alabama, and she continued her work in church and civic matters. Notably, she served for several years in leadership roles in the New Mobilians (Mobile’s newcomer’s support organization). Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Bernice Powell Roberts, and by her brother, Ray Roberts, and two of her sisters, Annette Roberts Mulhearn and Caroline Roberts Greer. She also experienced the loss of her beloved grandson, Alexander Hayden Cumpton. She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 60 years, Bobby L. Cumpton, whose partnership was a cornerstone of her life. Together they had three sons, Michael L. Cumpton (Susan), Mark A. Cumpton (Gina), and Mitchell B. Cumpton (Emily). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Taylor Cumpton (Robin), Patrick Cumpton, Sarah Catherine Cumpton, John Thomas Cumpton, Bailey Cumpton, Benjamin Cumpton, PFC Brooks Cumpton, and Mary Anabelle Cumpton. Sue has one great-grandson, Brantley Cumpton. She is also survived by her two sisters, Shirley Roberts Heath (Joe) and Kay Roberts Hembree. She leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, her sister-in-law, Mary Ann Cumpton Parks, her brother-in-law, Donald R. Cumpton (Paula) and countless other relatives and friends who were all dear to her. Sue treated everyone as if they were part of her family. Music was a central part of Sue’s life. Every day she could be heard singing hymns and she enjoyed classic country music as well. Her family is comforted by knowing that Sue is with Christ and her loved ones who have gone before her. Now, she is singing in the greatest choir of all.
