Staff Sergeant Michael S. Butler II, 36, passed away on June 30, 2019.
Staff Sergeant Butler was born on April 12, 1983 in Laurel, MS and resided in Mobile, AL.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy A. Butler; son William S. Butler II; step children Andrew and Mary Elizabeth Lambert; mother Evelyn Davis White; father Michael S. Butler (Diane); and sister Natasha Butler. Other survivors include: Brent Thompson, Meagan Watson, Mandy Miller, Montana Thompson, Janet Butler Unger, Richard Ulmer, Eleanor Lyons, Karey Barnes, James Davis, Ronald Davis, Peggy Wedgeworth, Jackson Davis, James White, Claudia Andrews, Pam Davis, Jason Davis, Trey Davis, and many other loving family members.
Staff Sergeant Butler is preceded in death by his grandparents Billy and Georgia Butler.
In December 2008, Staff Sergeant Michael S. Butler II began recruit training at Eastern Recruit Training Regiment, Parris Island, South Carolina. He graduated in March 2009. In April 2009, Staff Sergeant Butler attended the School of Infantry in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina until he graduated in June 2009. In June 2009, Staff Sergeant Butler was assigned to and deployed twice with 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina as an Infantry Rifleman and eventually an Infantry Squad Leader until July 2013. In July 2013, Staff Sergeant Butler earned the 8411 Military Occupational Specialty (job designation) or 8411, Canvassing Recruiter, and was assigned to Recruiting Substation Montgomery, Recruiting Station Montgomery, 6th Marine Corps District until June 2016. In July 2016, Staff Sergeant Butler was assigned to and deployed once with 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he would serve as an Infantry Rifleman, then Assistant Operations Chief, and then Infantry Unit Leader until February 2018. In March 2018, Staff Sergeant Butler was assigned to Recruiting Substation Fort Walton Beach, Florida as a Canvassing Recruiter and then transferred to Recruiting Substation Montgomery to become the Station Commander until he passed away in June 2019. Staff Sergeant Butler earned a black belt 1st degree for unarmed combat in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program and was an Expert Rifleman. Staff Sergeant Butler’s awards include: the National Defense Service Medal, two Navy Unit Commendations, the NATO Medal for operations in Afghanistan, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Marine Corps Recruiting Ribbon, three Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, three Marines Corps Good Conduct Medals, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, two Afghanistan Campaign Medals, nine Meritorious Masts, one Certificate of Commendation, one Certification of Appreciation, and one Letter of Appreciation.
Services will be held on Friday, July 12, 2019 at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 12:00-2:00 with the service beginning at 2:00 pm and graveside immediately following.
