Richard "Dick" M. Pennington entered his eternal rest June 22, 2024, with his family by his side at The Retreat By SAAD Hospice. He was a native of New Albany, Indiana but a resident of Mobile for over sixty five years. He was the retired Chairman of the Board of Mobile Memorial Gardens and founding partner of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where he served as President and CEO. He was also Vice President of SCI Alabama, owner of cemeteries and funeral homes throughout the state. Prior to his career in the funeral and cemetery industry, he held executive positions in banking and industry. He held leadership positions in many civic, charitable, and community organizations. He was recognized by the Mobile Press Register with the Mobile Merit of Honor for his many works. He often expressed that civic, charitable, and community service was akin to paying back to a community that had been so very good and welcoming to him. Dick was an active member of Springhill Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and Elder through the years. He was a 32 degree Mason and USAF veteran of the Korean Conflict as well as a member of the Mobile Country Club. Serving his term as President of Skyline Country Club, he had the privilege of dedicating a memorial flag area to Admiral Jeremiah Denton in remembrance of his time as a POW. He was an avid, life-long golfer and enjoyed traveling the world making new friends with his wife, Lila. Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Lucille Pennington; his first wife, Harriett Pennington, and daughter, Mary Anne Pennington Givhan. He is survived by his loving wife, Lila, who he often joked that he couldn't believe he had married someone with "Doctor" before her name and an LSU graduate. He is also survived by his daughters, Pam (Phil) Taylor of Flower Mound, TX, Shelley (Steve) Baker of Fairhope, AL; his daughter in a dog suit, Daisy; his bonus daughter, Jennifer (Steve) Mullins; sister, Pat Kreamer of Fairfax, VA; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank many caregivers at Fresenius Kidney Care Mobile on Old Shell Road and the Retreat Hospice by SAAD for the loving care they exhibited throughout this journey. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to Springhill Presbyterian Church, Fresenius Kidney Mobile on Old Shell Road, The Retreat Hospice by SAAD or a favorite charity of choice.
