Robert Patrick Downey Jr. - Mobile Memorial Gardens

Robert Patrick Downey Jr.

July 30, 1943 - June 1, 2025
Robert Patrick Downey, Jr (Pat) of Mobile, Alabama, danced his way into heaven, surrounded by loved ones, on June 1, 2025, leaving behind a trail of great stories, big laughter and perhaps a few unfinished golf games. He was born on July 30th, 1943, to Robert Patrick Downey, Sr, and Frances Tuberville Downey. Robert was known to most as “Pat”, “Dad”, “Pawpaw” or “that guy that cut my hair for 30 years.” He was a barber by trade but a storyteller by passion. For 58 years, he rarely missed a day at work. He had mastered the art of “barbering” and “bartering” and forged life long friendships along the way. He also enjoyed his service as the Barber Commissioner in Mobile for many years. Pat graduated from Theodore High School where he was a student athlete and pitched his way to a scholarship at the University of Southern Mississippi. He loved playing but his proudest moments were coaching and mentoring young men-including his brothers and son- through life and baseball…with equal parts grit and grace. Pat was an outdoorsman in the truest sense. He water-skied like a teenager well into his not-teenage years, and he fished and hunted with his grandchildren with just enough intensity to make sure he always had a good story to tell afterward. Golf became his game of choice, and he played it with a serious swing somewhere between forceful and “hopeful.” Above all, Pat was a family man. He married the love of his life, Hope Moore Downey, and for 62 years, they danced through life together, often literally. Their love was steady, their laughter frequent and their door was always open to family and friends. Together they raised three children who always experienced their love: Jeanna (Rodney) Pilot, Pat (Lori Darnley) Downey, and Joy (Vince) Cave. His legacy lives on in his eight grandchildren: Jerod (Jordan) Pilot, Brandon (Brooke) Pilot, Mason (Megan) Downey, Morgan (Pierre) Archaud, Mallory Downey, Vincent (Caroline) Cave, Lauren (Coates) Doss and John Patrick (Laurel) Cave. His face lit up when he saw his nine great grandchildren: Grace, Sadie, Suzanna Jean, Bowen, Frances, Fleming, Rylee, Maisie and Trip. He is also survived by his brothers, Joe (Debbie) and Mike Downey, and a joyful collection of nieces and nephews. We are especially thankful to his caretakers who allowed him to live with dignity until the end. Pat never met a stranger and never missed an opportunity to cut a rug. If heaven has a dance floor-and we believe it does-he’s already got the band playing something upbeat and the crowd laughing.
