Robert Franklin “Bob” Thompson, 90, born August 27, 1928, died peacefully at his home July 27, 2019 surrounded by his family. Bob had many titles: Bobby, Dad, Chief, Mr. Bob and Papaw. He was born to Ruby and ”Cy” Thompson in Kelleytown GA, a small farming town south of Atlanta, where he lived happily with his three siblings, Elton “Bubba”, Hugh “Hootie” and Janice. After graduating from high school, he joined the Air Force soon after World War II and was stationed with the occupying forces in Japan. He loved being a part of the military and had a 30-year career in the US Air Force. In 1954, Bob married the love of his life, Gilda Grace Campbell Thompson, and they had two children, Renee and Greg. During his time in the Air Force, Bob lived in many places, including Germany, Japan and Korea. He rose to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. After living in many places in the United States, Bob and Gilda and their children returned permanently to Mobile, AL in 1975. After retiring from the Air Force, Bob started a new career at the University of Mobile in the Maintenance Department. He had another 30-year career at the college, and did not retire until the age of 85. Bob loved working and made many wonderful friends throughout both of his careers. Bob is survived by his daughter, Renee Buffington; his son, Greg Thompson; his daughter-in-law, Katie Thompson; his four grandchildren, Beth Burden, Bobbi Owens, Hank Thompson and Grace Schumaker; two great-grandchildren, LaDaisha and Katelyn Burden; other relatives and friends. Bobby, Dad, Chief, Mr. Bob and Papaw, you will be missed and remembered. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob’s name may be made to Comfort Care Hospice, 709 Azalea Road, Suite A, Mobile, AL 36609, who so wonderfully cared for Bob in his final weeks. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 1, 2019 at 12:00 Noon from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday morning from 10:00 AM until service time. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
