Theresa P. McCann, a longtime resident of Mobile, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 22, 2020, at Mobile Nursing Home and Rehabilitation, Mobile, Alabama. Many of her children, grandchildren and other relatives were able to spend time with her during her last few days and hours.
Theresa was born on November 13, 1924, in Laurel, Mississippi, to parents Emma “Kitty” and John Thomas Pope. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, C. David McCann, Sr., and one son, C. David McCann, Jr.
Theresa, and her husband, David, were beloved parents, grandparents, and aunt and uncle to many relatives throughout the country. Their home was often the gathering place for most holidays and celebration activities for the entire family. It was common to have as many as 30-40 family and guests at these events. Relatives from across the country would often stop at David and Theresa’s home as they passed through Mobile. The fellowship, food and laughter would often go on for hours. Theresa would provide the food for everyone, the fun for the children, and David would provide the conversation and give any help with mechanical needs.
Theresa, from a large family, and not having much formal education due to the Great Depression, educated herself in life. She worked as a nurse’s aid for many years at the Mobile Infirmary and Cogburn Nursing Home. She was gifted in caring for the sick and elderly. Theresa was an extremely talented seamstress, often making wedding gowns for weddings, costumes for plays and holidays, and other garments of many kinds. She would repair and recover sofas and chairs, returning them to new condition. Theresa and David would tackle together almost any household project that needed doing to make their home more accessible to a growing family. Theresa will be remembered for her loving dedication and support of her husband and family. She was a faithful and supportive friend to her friends and neighbors.
Theresa is survived by her sons, Dennis McCann, of Mobile, and Danny McCann (Linda), of Spanish Fort, and daughters, Sharon August, of Decatur, GA, and Sandra Roberts (Mike), of Harrison, TN, and Teresa Widener (Buddy), of Mobile. Theresa is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives.
A gathering and memorial service to celebrate Theresa’s life will be held at the Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Chapel from 9:00 am until 9:50 am, on Friday, March 27, 2020, with a private family graveside service immediately following, at 10:00 am. The prayer and service to be conducted by Theresa’s beloved nephew, Robert Sullivan, of Jacksonville, FL.
