After celebrating his 94th birthday on March 10th, Walter George Ballard went to his eternal home on March 11, 2025.
Walter was born March 10, 1931 in Covington County, Alabama to Elmer Eric and Annie Laura Ballard. He graduated from Straughn High School in Andalusia, Al in 1949 and then went into service for his country in the United States Army serving during the Korean War. He returned home honorably discharged to take care of his family after his father was tragically killed. Walter worked at International Paper Company for 45 years before retiring and becoming active in the Alabama Chapter of Korean War Veterans. He served in numerous capacities for the organization and proved his love for his country in countless acts of service. There was so much more to Walter Ballard! We can’t begin to tell all he was involved in, how hard he worked and loved, or how invested he was in the lives of those he knew and loved. Walter knew Jesus as Lord, and lived his faith. He wasn’t a perfect man, but he knew the perfect Savior. He attended New Life Traditional Baptist Church. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Douglas and John, two sisters Jewel and Martha, his firstborn great granddaughter Brooke and by his loving wife of 56 years, Dorothy. Walter was a very loving, attentive, hands-on father, and grandfather to all his children, affectionately known as “Daddy”, and “Paw Paw”. He was also loved and respected by many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. Walter is survived by seven children, Jerome (Shirley), Ann (Ronnie), Bobby (Robin), Eva, Billy (Cindy), Stephen (Sonya), and Toi Lyn. His legacy also includes 15 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers and their spouses, Dewey (Georgia), Ray (Lee), and Eric (Judy). We remember Daddy’s hands…Go rest high, Daddy! We love you!
