Matthew Edmund Shanks passed away on June 9, 2026, at the age of sixty-five. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, to Gloria and Max Shanks, Matthew was the fourth of six children. He spent many years working as a mechanic, particularly on aircraft, and vintage automobile restoration, taking pride in his work and the skills he developed throughout his career. Matthew enjoyed spending time on his boat, working on trucks and ATVs, and appreciating the simple pleasures of life. He had a special fondness for his nieces, nephews, and their children and was known by those who knew him as someone who enjoyed discussing current events, sharing stories, and spending time with family and friends. In his final years, Matthew faced significant health challenges with resilience and courage. His Catholic faith remained central to his life, providing strength, comfort and hope through difficult days. He fought hard throughout his illness and was sustained by the faith that had long guided him. Matthew is survived by his son, Tristan Shanks; his daughter, Rachel Shanks; and his longing to see them again never waivered, his brother, Michael Shanks and wife, Ann; his sisters, Sissy Shanks and Melise Ankersen and husband, Grady. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gloria and Max Shanks; his brother, Curtis Shanks; and his sister, Marie Shanks. Matthew will be remembered by those whose lives he touched and by the family and friends who shared his journey. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any gifts be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Dominic Catholic Church Chapter, Matthew’s favorite charity.
